2012 Portfolio Assessment Rubric

This page contains the 2009 and annotated 2012 portfolio assessment rubrics (PAR) referenced in my theory of program assessment. You'll notice that the PAR underwent signficant revision in terms of layout and design from 2009 to 2012. Additional changes include:

  • a definition of "portfolio"

  • a new section on "critical reflection"

  • clearer instructions for readers assessing portfolios

The committee who revised the PAR--the critical reflection committee--made these changes in order to clarify the portfolio assessment process for both students and teachers. The critical reflection criteria were also added for this reason.

To the right you can see the original version of the PAR, drafted by the director of composition, assistant director of composition, and a new tenure-track faculty member, for use in the fall of 2009. Prior to the creation of this rubric, portfolio assessment was much less structured. Readers labeled portfolios "pass," "fail," or "boderline" using sticky notes. The PAR was created to provide more structure for the assessment and to standardize the curriculum.
